  • In a departure from the norm of trying to make a building energy efficient by adding fancy gadgets, four apartment houses in New York City will achieve extreme energy effciency by combining normal materials with better design. Each building features a minimum efficiency boiler, R-13 wall insulation, standard aluminum frame windows, and concrete block walls. The result: the first energy efficient buildings built for the same cost as code minimum construction. One of the buildings, 228 East Third Street is almost ready for occupancy, and a site across the street is under construction. The tour will include both sites. Participants will see the finished product and walk across the street to see the bare bones of the building. Please wear clothing and footware appropriate for a construction site.
