The successful integration of citizen involvement in an emergency management setting is critical as multifamily housing organizations prepare, respond, recover, and mitigate the impacts of disasters. In partnership with NeighborWorks America, Fall 2014’s opening resilience series training will cover the design and development of an emergency management program to address the organization and management of volunteers in emergency response, community engagement, logistics, communication and records administration. The training will focus on engaging residents to organize at a hyper-local level in a way that will increase community capacity to respond to an emergency. The day will focus on preparedness through community organizing, volunteer management, operations, logistics, communications and response systems. Participants will also receive materials and tools to use and apply after the training.   Trainers:   Dr. Tom Phelan consults on instructional programs for adults primarily in emergency management areas of training, exercise design, online course design, incident management teams, and communication. Dr. Phelan has conducted facilitator training for the New York City Office of Emergency Management, Syracuse Research Corporation, Dale Carnegie Institute, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and several corporate clients across the United States.   Ron Dwyer-Voss is the owner and founder of Pacific Community Solutions, Inc., a training, consulting and technical assistance company focused on working with community-based initiatives, nonprofit organizations and local governments. His work focuses on asset-based community development and organizing, community engagement and mobilization, education, participatory evaluation and community health.
