- Please join us for a tour of the newly reconstructed Henry Miller’s Theatre, New York City’s first theater to pursue LEED Certification. Built behind the restored façade of the original 1918 theater, Henry Miller’s Theatre uses environmentally friendly practices and technologies including 95% air filtration, waterless urinals, and recycled, low-emitting, and locally sourced materials. In addition to its sustainable features, the reconstruction has increased the handicapped and overall seating capacity of the theater, enhanced the acoustics, added new cafes and a restaurant and (perhaps most importantly) increased the number of bathroom stalls for women. The Durst Organization and Cook + Fox Architects — the same team behind the Bank of America Tower — have teamed up again on this wonderful reconstruction. The tour will be led by Rick Cook, Founding Partner of Cook + Fox Architects. - Integrated Design and Integrated Project Delivery are gaining momentum as organizational models that enable architects, consultants, clients and contractors to more effectively share information, better coordinate documents, reduce construction costs, optimize schedules, and build more sustainable projects. Organizations such as the AIA have developed process and contract documents that address this new method of working. However, the lack of many built precedents has left unanswered questions regarding the design process and project scheduling, fee structures, responsibility and legal issues, and the role of BIM. Panelists will address these questions from the perspectives of an owner, architect, and contractor, all who have participated in a formal IPD process. Phillip Bernstein will present Autodesk’s experience as an owner using IPD in the development of their new Massachusetts headquarters, on track for LEED Platinum Certification. Marnique Heath of STUDIOS will discuss the architect’s role and responsibilities in this new process, using the case study of the AIA Headquarters, one of the major IPD projects in the eastern United States. Finally, Tom Krajewski of DPR Construction will explain how IPD is helping to change owner expectations, subcontractor attitudes and improve worker productivity within the construction industry. Moderator: Ilana Judah, Int'l Assoc. AIA, LEED, Manager of Sustainability, FXFOWLE Panelists: Phillip G. Bernstein, FAIA, RIBA, LEED, Vice President, Autodesk Marnique Heath, AIA, LEED, Associate Principal, STUDIOS architecture Tom Krajewski, P.E., DBIA, LEED, Project Executive, DPR Construction 6:00pm: Drinks 6:30 to 7:30pm: Presentation 7:30 to 8:00pm: Q&A Tickets $10 Urban Green Members* $15 Non-members $10 Students (must show valid ID at the door) *Please be sure your membership is up-to-date before purchasing tickets at the Member price. - Please join us on a tour of Battery Park City's Teardrop Park. The desire to build and operate a sustainable public park influenced every aspect of Teardrop Park’s development, from material selection to contractor practices. Not only is the Battery Park City park layout and program a response to the microclimatic asymmetry created by the buildings and winds off the Hudson; the varied fabricated soils were also meticulously calibrated to create optimum growing conditions. Based on decades-long research into urban soils and non-toxic plant maintenance, environmental aspects of the park’s design include fully organic soils and maintenance regimes that don’t rely on pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides. Treated and recycled gray-water from the adjacent LEED Gold-rated Solaire Building and stormwater runoff from the site captured in an underground storage pipe supply all of the park’s irrigation needs. Experiencing natural environments is widely recognized as an important part of early childhood development and yet most urban playgrounds have banished plants in favor of equipment. Teardrop Park is designed to address this gap, offering adventure and sanctuary to urban children while engaging minds and bodies. Site topography, water (that can be turned on and off by the children), natural stone, and lush plantings contribute to an exciting inner world of natural textures, intense scale differences, and intricately choreographed views. Children are seen as the most important users, but the park also provides a landscape setting that appealed to multiple age groups represented in the neighborhood including students from a nearby high school, office workers, and elderly residents of a nearby assisted-care facility. Speakers: Laura Solano, Project Lead and Principal, Cambridge Office of Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates, Inc. T. Fleisher, Director of Horticulture, Battery Park City Parks Conservancy

Eagle Recycling is dedicated to recycling construction & demolition materials of all types and has been involved in projects such as the LEED platinum certified Visionaire in lower Manhattan. C&D materials are processed by twenty eight sorters separating materials that flow along twenty four conveyor belts, two star screens, an air classifier, two magnetic belts and through a water bath to effectively remove as much recyclable material as possible. To date, Eagle Recycling has saved 431 trees, 177,590 gallons of water and 831 cubic yards of landfill space, and that is just paper. Recycling aluminum has produced 832 tons of bauxite ore (the main ore used in aluminum) and 1440 megawatt-hours of electricity (one megawatt-hour can be converted into one-million hours of electricity). - Come learn about transformative and ecological ways to autonomy and health. We will explore Permaculture views on the true costs of the military industrial complex and ethical pathways to liberation from a diseased and decrepit infrastructure and economy. We can all create ways of living that are enjoyable, fulfilling and support what we do want: putting public health and well-being before private profits and militarization. Andrew Faust founder of The Center for Bioregional Living, has been teaching ecological design and Permaculture for over 17 years. Nearly two years ago he moved to NYC and hit the ground running teaching numerous classes, speaking on various panels, designing edible gardens, consulting urban and rural clients and volunteering in his local community garden. He is currently working on creating ecological training centers in North America and abroad, inspiring the next wave of students in his PDC that will start this July 25th, and preparing himself for the awesome task of fatherhood.
