Block Party and Design Competition — Success!

Posted by alison on Monday, October 3rd, 2011

A warm thank you from GreenHomeNYC to everyone who joined us in planning and celebrating this year’s The NEW New York Green Block Party! We had so many great vendors, sponsors, volunteers, and other supporters that we can scarcely begin to thank everyone individually.

We would like to send a special thank you to the staff and occupants of 34 Berry who were amazingly generous with their time and space. Thanks also to all of our neighbors on the block who not only put up with their street being blocked off for the day but also came out and participated!

A special thank you also to our sponsors, jury, students, and auction winners for our re-think Green Design Competition! Check out Inhabitat.com’s coverage of the Green Design Competition here and check back with us for more recaps of the second annual The NEW New York Green Block Party!

Solar Car Crafts + Yoga + Green Building Tours

Posted by alison on Wednesday, September 28th, 2011

This Saturday, The NEW New York Green Block Party, we have packed schedule of green living and learning. From yoga to solar car crafts to green building tours, we have fun activities all day! Details below, and more about the day’s events on our schedule page.

YOGA on the Roof
Join Hosh Yoga and Go Yoga for two incredible rooftop yoga experiences Saturday, Oct 1st. at 9am (with Hosh Yoga) and again at 1pm (with Go Yoga). Enjoy the view from 34 Berry’s roof terrace while you challenge your body and mind to relax with some of Brooklyn’s finest yoga instructors.
Meet at the corner of Berry and N.11th 15 minutes before class. Please bring a mat if you can!

Solar Car Crafts
Last year we had a lot of fun at the block party, and we think the 1,500 people who came also had fun… but no one had more fun than the kids at the solar car crafts table. This project is great for kids because it is easy to do and has big reward – a car that moves when it’s in the sun and stops immediately in the shadows. What better way to demonstrate to them that the sun can give us power?

We will be building solar cars with kids at noon and at 4pm. The cost of the craft is $5/kid – each kid makes one car.

NYC Green Buildings Open House
Since 2003, GreenHomeNYC has been organizing tours of NYC’s green buildings. This Saturday we have a guided tour of three buildings in Williamsburg plus coordinated open houses with buildings across the city. For more information, see the NYC Green Buildings Open House tour schedule.

Bikes and E-Waste — Drop-off at Green Block Party

Posted by alison on Sunday, September 25th, 2011

You know that Apple IIc sitting in your closet? Or that second bike taking up most of your storage space? Stop wasting space and the objects by dropping them off at the block party! Lower East Side Ecology Center will be collecting old electronics from 10am to 4pm. Show up with your old tv, vcr, Atari, just about anything. Recycle-A-Bicycle will be collecting old bikes from 11am to 5pm. In both cases, it’s okay to bring something that doesn’t work.

re-think: sustainable furniture design competition

Posted by alison on Thursday, September 22nd, 2011

GreenHomeNYC will be featuring the work of six environmentally conscious design students who have created sustainable furniture especially for the garden lounge space at this fall’s The NEW New York Green Block Party.

Using reclaimed materials donated by Film Biz Recycling and Build It Green, and the help of a jury of recognized architects / designers who offered creative support, the designers have revamped materials that would otherwise be waste.

Film Biz Recycling generously hosted the jury’s selection day. Located in Gowanus, Film Biz Recycling collects film props for re-rental or re-sale. Prop masters shop there and you can too!

Film Biz Recycling’s “____ in box” inventory! These new leather chairs could be yours!

Bring Poop to the Block Party — Donate on ioby!

Posted by alison on Wednesday, August 3rd, 2011

This October 1, GreenHomeNYC is bringing The NEW New York Green Block Party to Williamsburg. Last year in Gowanus we had many great local community groups join us. This year we hope to bring even more but we need some help to do so. Some of the organizations we are excited about bringing can’t afford our $175 vendor fee. This is where you come in: donate on our project page on ioby.org!

We have selected 6 totally rad groups and need to raise just over $1,000 so they can all participate. The orgs are:

- Borough Bees (beekeeping! honey!)

- Adopt-a-Farmbox (builds farmbeds for local schools and communities to grow fruit in the city)

- Sustainable Flatbush (promotes innovative energy practices and streets that prioritize people over cars)

- The Center for Health, Environment & Justice (mentors for environmental justice school by school, neighborhood by neighborhood)

- Bio Bus (an old schoolbus retrofit with cutting edge green technologies to educate kids)

- And last but not least: The Poop Project (advocates against dumping sewage into rivers, lakes and streams, and to talking about poop)

If you don’t know ioby, which stands for “in our back yard”, they are a microfinance website for community environmental action in NYC. They help groups and individuals raise donations for discrete projects. Any amount from a couple of bucks to thousands of dollars can be donated. Helen Ho and Erin Barnes from ioby have been participating on the steering committee for The NEW New York — we are really excited about working with them! Thanks ioby!
