Climate Activism 2021 Style: “Optivism”

By Pamela Berns   “Congratulations! Your inauguration marks a turning point in history for the United States of America and for the world,” said an open letter to President Biden. “You can be remembered as the ‘climate President’ who led humanity away from the cliff’s edge.”   Indeed, climate activists and advocates woke up on  January 20 from a long nightmare about the fate of our planet. By the time we went to bed, our new president had already recommitted the United States to the Paris climate agreement, (more…)

Monthly Forum – Green Catwalk 2021: The Circular Economy in Quick Soundbites

It’s been a GreenHomeNYC tradition to kick off our year of programming with our Green Catwalk, a dynamic event in which our speakers showcase exciting developments in our sustainable world through a series of rapid-fire presentations.

This year’s presenters will share programs and projects that are redefining waste as a resource, moving us towards a more efficient, circular economy. Join us as we explore the many ways to “re” to decrease the size of both our carbon and our landfill footprints.  The circular economy spurs economic development worldwide by redesigning, reducing, reusing, repurposing, recovering, refurbishing, regenerating, and recycling biological and technical materials to meet the growing resource needs of our consumptive society.

“Serengeti Rules” and “Gather”

Two Green Film Reviews by Tamanna Mohapatra   With a vaccine in sight, some of us might be starting to think about traveling again.  Dreams about exploring nature and immersing ourselves in other cultures may be inching closer to reality. In the meantime, as we continue to shelter in a pretty chilly place, we can virtually roam the Serengeti as we study the science of saving our ecosystems, and join Native Americans as they revive ancient agricultural practices, learning from the past in order to build a thriving future. Job Market Outlook: Green Infrastructure, Sustainable Business, Circular Economy

By Pamela Berns In 2020, the triple bottom line—people, planet, profits—took on a whole new meaning. The number of lives lost to COVID-19 continues to grow into the new year. Environmental regulation rollbacks under the Trump administration and the US withdrawal from the Paris agreement put the planet on even greater climate risk trajectory than before. Job losses and business failures altered the economy in ways that economists say may take years to fix. According to Fast Company, as of May, 2020, 33 million Americans had filed for unemployment; while some jobs might come back, new ones will need to be created to replace those that didn’t  survive. While, sadly, we will never recoup the lives lost and upended by the pandemic, there is a way forward toward a reciprocal recovery for all of the three Ps. “One of the best ways to add new jobs,” said Fast Company, is to “invest in green infrastructure.” (more…)

In Memory of Robert Gardella

Robert “Bob” Gardella, who was a volunteer and board member with GreenHomeNYC, passed away on November 23 after complications from diabetes.  He was a nationally known expert in the unique building science and performance of small family homes, an early advocate of health & safety protocols in the field, and a firm believer that he was not the “expert” that we all knew him to be.  He was respected by his fellow Weatherization family from “the Isle of Staten” as he would say, but his reach was both across NYS and the country.  His calm demeanor and self-deprecating sense of humor will be missed by those he both trained and hung out with in the field.   (more…)
