How Do We Prepare our Seniors for Emergency Events?

The next installment of Enterprise’s Resiliency Speaker Series will discuss how senior housing providers can strengthen resident engagement, staff, and building preparedness in anticipation of an emergency event. We will be speaking with experts and innovators in the field of senior preparedness from HealthxDesign, Jewish Association Serving the Aging and the New York Academy of Medicine. About Our Panel: Rupal Sanghvi, founder of HealthxDesign, is enthusiastic about incorporating tools from architecture and urban design to create innovation in public health programming. She founded HealthxDesign to identify the role of design in optimizing health outcomes. She is a principal investigator at the Public Health Institute, a fellow at the Design Trust for Public Space, and faculty at Parsons The New School for Design. She received the United States Secretary of Health’s Award for Innovations in Health Promotion and Disease Prevention after earning her master’s in public health at the University of Michigan. Lindsay Goldman is a project manager for New York Academy of Medicine (NYAM) and author of NYAM’s forthcoming report Resilient Communities: Empowering Older Adults in Disasters and Daily Life, which details the findings and recommendations from a yearlong study of older adults during Hurricane Sandy. Prior to her time at NYAM, Lindsay worked at UJA-Federation where she was responsible for strategic planning and allocations to programs and agencies serving older adults in New York and Israel. Lindsay also served as the director of the Health Enhancement Partnership at Lenox Hill Neighborhood House and received a Best Practice Award for her work from the National Council on Aging in 2008. She holds a B.A. from Wesleyan University and an M.S.W. from NYU. Donald Manning is the director of Housing Management at Jewish Association Serving the Aging (JASA), where he oversees 1,916 apartments for the elderly and disabled in three NYC boroughs. At JASA, Mr. Manning successfully completed the construction of 53 HUD 202 Section 8 apartments in the Lower East Side, directing the refinancing of more than $30 million in mortgages to rehabilitate and improve the overall facilities home to more than 700 families. Prior to his work at JASA, Mr. Manning was the deputy director of Housing for the Ridgewood Bushwick Senior Citizens Council in Brooklyn. Through his extensive work in housing, Mr. Manning has assembled and monitored project teams consisting of architects, attorneys, housing consultant and contractors. Mr. Manning received his B.A. in business administration from Pace University and is a graduate of CUNY School of Law. The series is part of Enterprise’s ongoing efforts to support Hurricane Sandy recovery and rebuilding and strengthening the resilience of affordable housing for the most vulnerable residents.
