Although CASE addresses a wide variety of global challenges, this panel will focus discussion on innovative façade strategies. From integrated solar power to air purification and energy reduction, these advancements in building systems will substantially impact every sector of the built environment, including conservation of water, reduction of material use, harvesting of urban wind energy, and effective delivery of HVAC within the building matrix. Experts Anna Dyson, Jason Vollen and Peter Randolf-Hazard Stark are CASE faculty who will share their extensive knowledge in the implementation of adaptive building envelopes at this distinctive event.
Julie Hiromoto, AIA, LEED AP | Associate, Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP
Julie is currently managing the 3.5 million sf One World Trade Center and 40-story 250 West 55th Street projects in NYC. Prior to joining the Project Management group she was a Senior Technical Architect focusing on exterior enclosures and sustainable design initiatives. Her previous experience designing and implementing these systems affords an understanding of the complex issues involved in developing and constructing large scale projects. She also leads CASE’s contributions on SOM projects and is an Adjunct Professor at NYU’s Shack Institute of Real Estate.
Demetrios Comodromos | Partner/Founder, Method Design Architecture + Urbanism
In 2008, Demetrois co-founded Method Design Architecture + Urbanism, a design shop that focuses on the provocation to activate spatial, material and social dynamics as a network of action and reaction. He also focuses his work on renovations to apartments and commercial spaces, new residential and commercial construction, and community planning and urban design. Demetrios received his Bachelor of Architecture degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and a Masters in Advanced Architectural Design from Columbia
Anna Dyson | Director, Center for Architecture Science and Ecology

Anna Dyson, the founding Director of CASE (2007-present), teaches design, technology, and theory at the School of Architecture at Rensselaer. She has been recognized with multiple awards for her designs and innovations, and her work has been exhibited internationally. Dyson holds multiple international patents for building systems inventions and is currently directing interdisciplinary research to develop new building systems that integrate advances in science and technology.
Matt Gindlesparger | Clinical Assistant Professor, School of Architecture, Rensselaer Rolytechnic Institute
Throughout his career, Matt has focused his work on performative masonry façade systems, digital fabrication and rapid prototyping. Matt worked as Project Manager and Principal Investigator for the University of Arizona’s 2009 Solar Decathlon entry, SEED[pod]. He also worked with Binary Design in Tuscon where he was involved with energy effective architecture. In 2010, Matt joined CASE/RPI where he is now focusing on prototyping, fabrication, and testing of next generation building technologies.

Jason Oliver Vollen is a Registered Architect and researcher, focusing on emerging material technologies. Vollen is a principal with Binary Design, a collaborative practice focusing on energy effective architecture and emerging material processes. He has worked as a project manager, designer, and fabricator with the Cranbrook Architecture Office as well as with Matter Architecture Practice in New York.
