Hurricane Sandy knocked out electrical and gas power to hundreds of thousands of multifamily buildings, leaving residents without heat, hot water, potable water, and access to transportation. When disasters do occur, community level action is essential to effective natural disaster preparation and response. However, the process of empowering residents to be prepared for disaster must take place before, during, and after such catastrophic events occur. Effective community engagement is particularly important because citizens are in many cases the first responders and have the greatest chance to save lives and provide support in the hours and days immediately after disaster occurrences. Certainly, an effective community response can diminish some of the suffering and loss that occurs during and after the recent disasters. Disaster resilient communities don’t just happen. They are communities that work together and know each other on a daily basis, so that when a crisis or issue arises, they have the relationships in place to work together.   Presenter: JoAnn Jordan from the Seattle Office of Emergency Management will be presenting on the topic of best practice resident engagement strategies for emergency preparedness. JoAnn is the Public Education Coordinator for Seattle’s Office of Emergency Management [OEM]. JoAnn is an award winning civic engagement educator and trainer who has been developing programs specializing in Disaster Preparedness education for municipalities, schools, and businesses for over 20 years. Her dedication to public education in fire, life safety, and disaster education has won her local and national recognition. She designed and launched the Seattle Neighborhoods Actively Prepare [SNAP] program which is the city’s flagship program to assist residents in their efforts to “Get Ready, Get Connected and Get Strong” for any potential emergency. Her work during her tenure with Seattle’s OEM has won 8 national awards including the FEMA 2013 Public Education Emergency Awareness Award..   Sessions will also be available via Webex. The series is part of Enterprise’s ongoing efforts to support Hurricane Sandy recovery and rebuilding, and strengthening the resilience of affordable housing for the most vulnerable residents.
