Facades emerged as a concern for building performance in the 1800s, and architects have addressed the issue with a variety of solutions. In their study of active envelopes, authors Russell Fortmeyer and Charles Linn explore 27 buildings from around the globe, each with unique architectural features, but chosen by the same criteria – envelopes that respond dynamically to the climate and transfer energy toward productive ends.
In his presentation, Russell Fortmeyer, will put the development of glass skins and dynamic facades in historical context. He will also explore several of the exemplar projects analyzed in Kinetic Architecture, including the towers of Aedas’s Abu Dhabi Investment Council Headquarters, with their shading screens inspired by traditional Arabic architecture, as well as experimental projects exploring new technologies, like Doris Sung’s Bloom, an operable canopy temporarily installed in the courtyard of a Los Angeles gallery.
