The first step to making a building more efficient is to understand how much energy it uses and how its usage compares with that of similar buildings. As a result, the Greener, Greater Buildings Plan (GGBP) enacted Local Law 84 (LL84), requiring owners of large buildings to annually measure their energy consumption.   With the recent release of the LL84 2012 report findings, the public now has access to a high level of comparative energy usage information for the first time. Out of New York City’s entire building stock, 2% of all buildings account for 48% of the city’s energy usage. This is an important data set, since the buildings account for 74% of total emissions, making them an excellent target for achieving the goals of the Greener Greater Buildings plan. On the national scale, there are 7 other cities that have enacted similar benchmarking laws. With 2.25 billion square feet of NYC buildings benchmarked, our effort far exceeds the total square footage of all other 7 cities combined.   This discussion will focus on key findings from the LL84 report, identify trends in our building stock, introduce strategies for owners and managers to use the data to improve portfolio performance, and highlight changes and next steps for the Greener Greater Buildings Plan.   Moderator: Erica Brabon | Senior Consultant, Multifamily Housing, Steven Winter Associates   Speaker: Laurie Kerr | Senior Policy Analyst, Natural Resources Defense Council
