Join Urban Green Council for an exclusive tour of the Brooklyn Botanical Garden Visitor Center. Opened in May of last year, the Visitor Center was conceived as a seamless extension of the Garden’s landscape. The building’s many sustainable features include a leaf-shaped green roof that hosts over 40,000 plants including grasses, spring bulbs, and perennial wildflowers.   The building also features a geoexchange system that heats and cools the interior spaces, and a series of rain gardens that collect and filter runoff to improve storm-water management. The curved glass walls of the Visitor Center offer veiled views into the Garden with fritted glass filtering light to minimize heat gain and maximize natural illumination. As a contrast, the North side of the building is built into a preexisting berm, which helps to increase the overall thermal efficiency.   The tour will be led by Tracey Faireland, Director of Capital Projects for the Brooklyn Botanical Garden and will focus on how the sustainable design of the Visitor Center was used to seamlessly integrate the building with the existing surroundings.   SPEAKER   Tracey Faireland | Director of Capital Projects, Brooklyn Botanical Garden   Tracey Faireland is a professional engineer, licensed general contractor, and the director of capital projects at Brooklyn Botanic Garden where she is overseeing the design and construction of projects within BBG’s Campaign for the Next Century including a storm-water management system, a water conservation project, and the new Visitor Center Project that is aimed toward earning LEED Gold certification.   Michael Mancuso | Associate, Jaros Baum & Bolles   Michael is an associate at Jaros Baum & Bolles and has been with the firm for over 24 years. As project manager with JB&B, Mike oversaw the MEP design and construction phases of the Brooklyn Botanic Garden Visitor Center. Mike has a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Polytechnic Institute and a MS in Mechanical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
