Join Urban Green Council for an exclusive tour of the Brooklyn Botanical Garden Visitor Center. Opened in May of last year, the Visitor Center was conceived as a seamless extension of the Garden’s landscape. The building’s many sustainable features include a leaf-shaped green roof that hosts over 40,000 plants including grasses, spring bulbs, and perennial wildflowers.

The building also features a geoexchange system that heats and cools the interior spaces, and a series of rain gardens that collect and filter runoff to improve storm-water management. The curved glass walls of the Visitor Center offer veiled views into the Garden with fritted glass filtering light to minimize heat gain and maximize natural illumination. As a contrast, the North side of the building is built into a preexisting berm, which helps to increase the overall thermal efficiency.

The tour will be led by Tracey Faireland, Director of Capital Projects for the Brooklyn Botanical Garden and will focus on how the sustainable design of the Visitor Center was used to seamlessly integrate the building with the existing surroundings.
