ECOLOGICAL BARRIERS: HOLDING SEA LEVELS AT BAY
April 25, 2013 6:00 - 8:00 PM
With the global rise in sea levels, politicians and government officials have been calling for barriers and heavily engineered, costly infrastructure to protect New York City. Meanwhile, a growing number of planners, engineers, architects, and landscape architects are advocating the creation of so-called “soft” coastal edges, including restored wetlands and reintroduced natural habitats as complements or alternatives to harder-edged, constructed solutions.
Join Urban Green Council as we discuss ecologically sound methods for mitigating the effects of flooding and sea-level rise in the context of several projects—the proposed East River Blueway Plan and Governors Island Park, which is currently under construction. Panelists will also discuss the strategies put forward by Rising Currents, a prescient 2010 exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art.
