Flipping the Switch: LED Obstacles and Opportunities

For the last ten years, the emergence of LEDs (light emitting diodes) has been the talk of the lighting industry. LEDs made their lighting industry debut as color changing light sources used primarily for theatrical lighting effects, but have evolved into a valuable, general illumination light source with tremendous sustainability implications.   LED sources meet or exceed the efficiency of fluorescent sources (as measured by lumen output per watt input), and they have not yet reached their maximum efficacy potential. They are also typically rated for 50,000+ hours of lamp life, considerably longer than most interior general illumination light sources. Despite their obvious advantages in many situations, LEDs are not necessarily the clear choice for widespread use, or the hands-down replacement for all light sources.   This roundtable discussion will center around the current state of LEDs for general illumination, including opinions on the evolution and future of LEDs. A panel of LED experts will discuss the benefits and challenge of using LEDs, as well as application guidelines for when to use and when to avoid them.   MODERATOR   Brent Protzman, Ph.D., LC, CEM | Architectural Engineering Leader, Lutron Electronics   As the head of the Energy Solutions group, Brent drives energy and application research and analysis with a focus on integration and architectural applications. He maintains collaborations with highly respected research institutions and oversees the collection and analysis of energy data, energy-savings estimation procedures, and validation of energy claims. He is the author of published articles on human factors in lighting and lighting energy. Prior to Lutron, he was an assistant professor in the Building Systems Program at the University of Colorado where he conducted lighting research, designed and constructed a daylighting research lab, and taught courses in lighting design, sustainable lighting practice, daylighting, and human factors in lighting.   SPEAKERS   Ethan Biery | Design and Development Leader, Lutron Electronics   While his early career was spent developing dimming systems for large-scale commercial projects, Ethan has spent the last four years focusing on LED technology, especially in the area of testing and improving dimming compatibility. In this role, he works with colleagues from all levels in the industry, from chipset vendors to lamp and fixture manufacturers, in order to improve compatibility between dimmers and LED light sources. His expertise has allowed him to contribute to training, technical whitepapers, application notes, and industry standards regarding LED technology, including major contributions to NEMA SSL7A and Zhaga   Susannah Zweighaft, LEED® AP, IESNA, PLDA, CLEP, LC | Partner, AKF Group & Director, AKF Lighting Design   Susannah Zweighaft has over 30 years of professional architectural lighting design experience. As a Partner headquartered in the AKF New York City office, Susannah manages lighting design projects throughout all 10 AKF offices. She has been the Director of AKF Lighting Design for over 10 years and previously ran a Lighting Department for 15 years before joining AKF. Her experience includes corporate, commercial, cultural, educational, public space, residential, healthcare, monument, institutional, and sports facilities. She has a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatrical Lighting from Carnegie-Mellon University and studied electrical engineering at City College. Susannah is an IALD Associate member, a PLDA member and has been a member of the IES since 1982.
