Future of NYC Sustainability – Opportunities & Challenges in Building a Green City
April 19, 2016 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Join Be Social Change on Tuesday, April 19th for a panel discussion on the Future of NYC: Sustainability – Opportunities & Challenges in Building a Green City.
Home to over 8.5 million people, NYC’s high population density wouldn’t be possible without highly efficient innovations, including an extensive mass transit system, electrical power grid, the water system, sewage removal and treatment, product packaging, and solid waste removal. With greenhouse gas emissions at a fraction of the national average, some say NYC is a model of environmental responsibility. However, with over 1.2 billion gallons of water drawn from reservoirs over 100 miles from the city and over 25,000 tons of garbage collected each day, the city is far from self-sufficient.
Bringing together leaders and experts from nonprofits, academia, government, and the private sector, this panel will explore the challenges and opportunities facing NYC in becoming a more sustainable city and how New Yorkers can do their part in protecting the planet and it’s resources. What initiatives are addressing energy and buildings, waste and recycling, parks and public spaces, and environmental justice in NYC? What would a green, sustainable NYC could look like, and what policies and programs are laying the groundwork to get us there?
