Green Supers: The Critical Role of Energy Efficiency Training
November 12, 2013 6:00pm - 8:30 pm
In New York City, roughly 75% of greenhouse gas emissions result from building energy usage. While the focus in combating the growth of energy consumption by buildings has historically been improvements in building system, these interventions are only half of the story. Research shows that building operations and maintenance (O&M) are critical means by which we can impact building energy consumption. In fact, smart O&M can save between 5% and 20% on building energy costs. To capitalize on this opportunity, the 32BJ Training Fund created the Green Supers Training Program with funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
32BJ Training launched Green Supers as an innovative, holistic training program, with the goal of training property service workers in a comprehensive approach to energy management in buildings. The training targeted building superintendents and handypersons as catalysts for change in multifamily buildings. These building staff studied basic concepts and efficiency strategies on building envelope, lighting, HVAC as well as Indoor Environmental Quality. The course culminated in a Green Building Plan and preparation for the BPI Multifamily Building Operator Certification and Urban Green’s Green Professional in Operations and Maintenance (GPRO). Over 2,000 members were trained. Steven Winter Associates, Inc. completed an evaluation of the Green Supers Training Program and reported that it is not only a proven model here in New York, but also scalable nationwide.
Join us for a presentation on the Green Supers Training Program — hear from building superintendents on the critical role that Green Building training played in their buildings and from Steven Winter Associates, Inc. on their evaluation of the program.
