Lighting the Public Realm: Importance of Design, Technology, Ecology & the Collaborative Process

Why LED Lighting? Using Design, Understanding Technology, Embracing Ecology   Advanced technology has made LED-lighting a good solution for outdoor environments. The unwanted side-effects of traditional lighting: wasted energy, maintenance costs, and the negative visual and environmental impacts of over-illumination, are driving the adoption of LED lighting for many projects. This session covers cutting edge information about human interaction with color, contrast, and glare that enhance the nighttime visual experience while protecting the environment. This session will present concepts that leave participants armed to evaluate LED-lighting for future projects.   Followed by a panel discussion that will focus on the importance of lighting in the public realm, creating a sense of place and the collaborative design process.   Sponsored by: ASLA-NY and Landscape Forms   Organized by: ASLA-NY   Speakers: Scott Reinholt, ASLA Scott Reinholt holds a Bachelors of Landscape Architecture from Michigan State University and is a registered Landscape Architect in the state of Michigan. Reinholt served as landscape architect for Beckett and Raeder and JJR in Ann Arbor, MI for a total of 14 years and filled the role of President of the Michigan ASLA Professional chapter. Serving as Sales Manager at Landscape Forms, Reinholt works with landscape architects, lighting designers, municipalities and other end-users to provide lighting solutions that meet requirements from all points of view.   Panel Moderator: Signe Nielsen, FASLA, Principal Mathews Nielsen Landscape Architects, P.C. Signe Nielsen has been practicing as a landscape architect and urban designer in New York since 1978 and has overseen the planning, design and construction of more than $550 million worth of projects. A Fellow of the ASLA, she is the recipient of over 100 national and local design awards for public open space projects and is published extensively in national and international publications. Ms Nielsen is a Professor of Urban Design and Landscape Architecture at Pratt Institute in both the Graduate School of Urban Design and Undergraduate School of Architecture and currently serves as President for the Public Design Commission of the City of New York.   Panelists: Jonie Fu, AIA, Principal & Director of Urban Design, AECOM. Jonie Fu has provided design leadership for many award-winning projects over the last twenty-five years. Believing that every city is unique and every place distinctive, Fu is particularly interested in understanding the physical design issues of the site and its context, and above all the relationship between the built environment and the surrounding open spaces. She skillfully balances concept ideas with pragmatic needs, and is equally interested in community concerns and market demands. Jonie Fu is leading AECOM’s urban design studio to provide their clients with a comprehensive and sustainable design approach to projects such as large scale urban design, transit-oriented design, urban infill and revitalization master plans and campus master plans. Through thoughtful analysis and creative conceptualization, the goal is to create successful and memorable destination in a collaborative effort. Jonie Fu has a Master of Architecture and Urban Design from Columbia University and a Bachelor of Architecture from University of Southern California.   Barbara Cianci Horton, FIALD, MIES, LC, Senior Principal, HLB Horton Lees Brogden Lighting Design Barbara Horton captures light with a special brilliance for designing solutions to meet challenging requirements. Barbara’s strength arises from her broad interest in the arts and its affect on people. Combined with her knowledge of technical advances in lighting, Barbara creates powerful solutions to meet client goals – no cookie-cutter approach. As CEO, Barbara oversees the firm’s legacy with an emphasis on creating a culture that is highly driven, curious, motivated for growth and profitability, balances the quality of life and work and is poised to lead the lighting industry. Horton is one of HLB’s senior design principals and practice leader in urban lighting, education and healthcare. She is actively involved in several professional organizations including, President of IALD. An avid sailor and skier, she sparks to the outdoor environments and the benefits of light and darkness as a part of our wellbeing. Barbara’s portfolio also includes a well-rounded expertise in notable lighting projects for corporate, academic, recreation, hospitality/retail and performing arts, among others.   Leni Schwendinger, Associate Principal, Lighting Designer/ Urbanist, ARUP With more than 15 years of experience creating lighting environments for architectural and public spaces all over the world Schwendinger creates illuminated environments, products and programs for public spaces. This work is shared through public speaking engagements and advisory services. She has lectured and taught widely throughout the United States, Europe and Japan. Leni Schwendinger is a recognized authority on the many issues and applications of public lighting, art and community outreach. Leni is a graduate of the London Film School and a member of the International Association of Lighting Designers. She is a recipient of awards from IES Lumen, ASLA, AIA, SEGD, International Women’s Entrepreneurial Challenge and including a New York State Council on Arts Fellowship.   Ken Smith, ASLA, Principal, Workshop: Ken Smith Landscape Architect Ken Smith is one of the best-known of a generation of landscape architects equally at home in the worlds of art, architecture, and urbanism. Trained in both design and the fine arts, he explores the relationship between art, contemporary culture, and landscape. His practice, Workshop: Ken Smith Landscape Architect was established in 1992 and is based in New York City with a southern California office in Irvine. He is committed to creating landscapes, especially parks and other public spaces, as a way of improving the quality of urban life. Much of his work pushes beyond traditional landscape typologies-plaza, street, and garden-to landscapes that draw on diverse cultural traditions and influences of the contemporary urban landscape. Smith’s approach is directed at projects of varying scales and types: temporary installations, private residential gardens, public spaces, parks and commercial projects. With a particular emphasis on projects that explore the symbolic content and expressive power of landscape as an art form, the Workshop specializes in the investigation of new expressions in landscape design. Ken Smith is a graduate of Iowa State University and the Harvard University Graduate School of Design. He has taught and lectured at Harvard, the City College of New York, and other universities and institutions around the world. Smith’s work has been published widely in the popular and trade press.
