Sea Change: UGBC Fall Conference

September 30, 2013 12:30 - 5:30 PM   Save the date for Sea Change: The Shifting Relationship between Sustainability and Resilience! As extreme weather events increase in frequency, so too does concern about the resilience of our cities and the buildings we inhabit. Through our work leading the Building Resiliency Task Force, we’ve noticed a shift in the approach to sustainable buildings, one that more frequently includes resilience.  It’s a change that could strengthen the relationship between sustainable strategies and resilience measures or expose contradictions between the two.  As the building industry prepares to meet the challenges of a changing climate – rising sea levels, increased precipitation and drought, more frequent and intense storms, and higher temperatures – we ask, how do we maintain our efforts to mitigate climate change while simultaneously responding to its inevitable consequences? Our keynote speaker will set the stage by presenting the case for sustainable and resilient buildings.  We’ll further examine the issue in discussions at two scales: the scale of the City and that of the Building. Government officials, developers, and building professionals will discuss efforts to ensure building resilience both pre- and post- weather event and discuss opportunities to improve sustainability through resilience. Panelists will also debate the real and perceived changes in the development and financing of buildings due to risks associated with climate change. Check back soon for speaker details and an updated schedule!
