Building enclosures are essentially an assembly of multiple barriers that, in combination, determine the building’s ability to control the flow of heat, air, liquid water, and water vapor. Each barrier has a distinct function, but many materials can serve the functions of multiple barriers. The placement of each barrier within the enclosure can be as critical as its proper design, detailing, and construction. This presentation examines the basics of heat, air, and moisture flow in buildings, and discusses how each of the four barriers manages those elements. For each barrier, we show practical examples and details, and use case studies to illustrate both proper and improper design and construction. We will also examine the specific case of “four barrier” systems which, despite a questionable track record of performance, are gaining popularity and becoming more common.
