The Newest Laws and Their Implications

Join the IFMA New York City Sustainability Committee and Urban Green Council for a presentation and discussion on the Greener, Greater Building Laws and their implications for Facility Managers.   Beginning in 2008, the City of New York passed a series of laws with the intent of reducing energy consumption and increasing energy efficiency in building operations. These laws, collectively known as the “Greater, Greener Buildings Plan,” have far-ranging consequences for the operation and maintenance of buildings. Initially affecting only Commercial properties of 50,000 square feet or more, the compliance threshold will be reduced to buildings of 25,000 square feet by 2016 if current Mayoral policy remains in effect.   The laws directly impacting the Facilities Management Community are: Local Law 84: currently requires annual bench-marking and reporting of energy and water consumption Local Law 85: will implement a NYC-specific Energy Conservation Code (NYCECC) and currently requires buildings to meet the most current energy code for any renovation or alteration project Local Law 87: soon to be implemented, requires buildings to conduct an energy audit and perform retro-commissioning once every 10 years Local Law 88: will take effect in 2025 and require lighting in non-residential space of applicable buildings to comply with the current energy codes and large commercial tenants be provided with sub-meters. SPEAKERS   Cecil Scheib | Director of Advocacy, Urban Green Council   Cecil is Director of Advocacy for Urban Green Council and served as Managing Director of the Building Resiliency Task Force. An engineer with over twenty years sustainability experience, Cecil works with the Mayor’s Office and City Council to draft and enact environmental legislation and helped create a Green Building Roadmap for NYC’s next mayor. He was previously Director of Energy and Sustainability at New York University, cutting energy use and greenhouse gas emissions by 30% in five years.   Murray Levi | President, Gordon Atlantic Design, LLC   Murray is an award-winning architect and a lifelong environmental advocate with more than three decades in the practice of architecture. His work has repeatedly produced architectural excellence by applying sustainable design principles. Since the early 1980’s he has participated in many ground-breaking sustainably designed architecture projects, building performance studies, and regularly consults with institutional and corporate clients seeking to reduce their environmental footprint and carbon burden.   John Lee | Deputy Director for Green Buildings & Energy Efficiency, New York City Mayor’s Office of Long Term Planning and Sustainability   John leads New York City’s policy and legislative efforts, driving the built environment to unprecedented energy efficiency standards. John’s previous public sector service was with the NYC Department of Buildings as Senior Architect in the codes development division, and with the Department of City Planning where he served as an Urban Designer   PRICE IFMA Professional Members & Urban Green Council Members: $25.00
