GreenHomeNYC’s Fall 2011 NYC Green Buildings Open House is Saturday October 1st! Coinciding with The NEW New York green block party, this year’s tour includes more than a dozen buildings in all five boroughs of New York City!

The Fall 2011 Open House is part of the 16th annual National Solar Tour sponsored by the American Solar Energy Society (ASES). Guests visit a variety of green buildings, accompanied by the owners, designers, and engineers who built them. More than 160,000 participants will visit some 5,500 buildings in 3,200 communities across the U.S.

Call for participants! 2011 Fall Green Buildings Open House, Sat. 10/1

The Green Buildings Open House is a chance for the public to tour green buildings throughout New York City. Open House not only provides a view of the inner workings of several green buildings, but also gives visitors a chance to meet the owners, architects and designers who built and operate them.

The 2011 Fall Green Buildings Open House in New York City is organized by GreenHomeNYC and the Northeast Solar Energy Association (NESEA). It is part of the 16th annual National Solar Tour sponsored by the American Solar Energy Society (ASES). More than 160,000 participants will visit some 5,500 buildings in 3,200 communities across the U.S.

GreenHomeNYC invites owners, architects, and engineers to showcase their exemplary green buildings as part of this national event.

The Melody Green Building Tour

Join GreenHomeNYC Saturday, July 23rd as we tour one of New York’s newest, greenest multifamily buildings!

Blue Sea Development has recently completed a multifamily affordable co-op in the Bronx using some of the latest in sustainable and energy efficient design.  The Melody, as the building is named, is comprised of 63 affordable one, two and three bedroom cooperative apartments with a fully equipped fitness center and outdoor fitness path.  It is the first residential building in New York to comply with the NYC Active Design Guidelines, promoting physical activity and health through building design.

May 7th Green Building Open House Tour

On Saturday, May 7th GreenHomeNYC will host it’s 10th biannual Green Building Tour! GreenHomeNYC’s tours provide the public a rare chance to visit green buildings around New York City and meet the professionals responsible for them. This year we will conduct two tours that will provide in depth, hands on information about green buildings and through the interaction with professionals, facilitate the adoption of sustainable building methods and materials. On Saturday October 9nd, GreenHomeNYC presents a follow up to our September forum: The Greening of Newark, NJ. Join us for a Green Building Open House tour of St. Philip’s Academy and Roseville Commons in Newark. Participants get an opportunity to learn about energy efficient and sustainable building methods directly from building professionals responsible for the projects. You will experience firsthand the inner workings, building systems and design details, as well the challenges and accomplishments that were faced by the professionals involved with these commercial and residential buildings.

Green Building Tour of Gen. Colin Powell Apartments

On Saturday April 24th, join GreenHomeNYC on a tour of the Gen. Colin Powell Apartments, a new green affordable residential coop building in The Bronx. We’re grateful to Les Bluestone and Blue Sea Development Company for hosting the tour. Come and hear about an array of green features, including an extensive green roof, high efficiency boilers, recycled and low impact materials, and more.

Spring 2009 Green Buildings Open House

The 2009 Spring Green Buildings Open House tours took place on May 9, by bus and bike in the Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens. Even if you missed the tours, from here you can read a recap from each one and find out more about each building in our Green Buildings directory. Thanks to all the hosts and participants for helping make the tours informative and fun.

The Brooklyn Bicycle Tour visited Eco Brooklyn Show House, Poly Prep Lower School, Green on Dean and 3rd and Bond. Read a full run-down of the tour.

The other Brooklyn tour got around by bus and also took a foray into Queens for lunch - read a full tour recap here. Buildings visited included Atlantic Terrace, 439 Metropolitan Ave, Queen’s Botanical Gardens Visitor Center and Sterling Green.

The Bronx tour recap describes visits to green buildings and green businesses too. The buildings were El Jardin, Green Decatur and the Bronx Library Center, with suppliers Rebuilder’s Source and Globus Cork also hosting us.

About the NYC Green Buildings Open House

As a leading resource for the exchange of information on green building in New York City, GreenHomeNYC continues pursuing its mission of facilitating the adoption of sustainable building methods and materials with three tours of Green buildings on May 9, 2009. In its seventh annual tour, GreenHomeNYC offers the public a unique glimpse at the inner workings and design details comprising exemplar Green buildings in Brooklyn and the Bronx. Guests on the tours will be hosted by the dedicated sustainability practitioners of these buildings, such as their expert architects, LEED APs, developers, engineers and owners. Learn about the challenges and accomplishments that were faced by the professionals involved with these commercial and residential buildings.

Tour visitors learn valuable ways to go green by observing examples of:

  • energy-saving solutions
  • photovoltaic and solar hot water technology and integration
  • water-saving fixtures and appliances
  • green roofs
  • solar heating (”passive solar”) techniques
  • allergy/asthma-sensitive building materials
  • various of green materials including paints, insulation, carpeting, renewably- harvested wood products, reclaimed and recycled materials

Since 2003, GreenHomeNYC has organized the NYC Green Buildings Open House as a part of Northeast Sustainable Energy Associaion’s (NESEA) Green Buildings Open House and the American Solar Energy Society’s (ASES) National Solar Tour.
