- The Monti building was built in the 1880's as part of the Budwiser brewery. The name was soon changed to the Nassau brewery after a law suit from another more established Budwiser brewery. At 45,000 square feet the building was adapted though the years for several different users including Hienz (57 varieties), locker and metal work fabrication and a moving and storage company. In 2007 the "green " renovation of the building was completed and currently it houses 25 different small businesses ranging from artists to architects to software designers.
The renovation was designed by Benton Brown and constructed by Big Sue Inc. the construction firm he runs with his wife Susan Boyle. The building has a 39 Kw solar array (soon to be net metered) on the roof which provides for the entire daytime electricity demands of the building. It is heated by radiant heat -run by highly efficient condensing boilers and has a 4000 square foot extensive green roof. All of the floors of the building as polished concrete - most were poured with a high concentration of flyash mixture. All of the windows are double pane argon filled with low e coating and are wood frames with aluminum cladding.
The future plans for the building include an 11,000 cubic foot rainwater catchment system plumbed to service the toilets and the continuation of striving to minimize the building's impact on our planet's diminishing resources.
